CARDINAL NOTES
- The Cardinals are coming off a 31-21 loss to Black Hills State last weekend. Jewell faced a three-score deficit in the second half and attempted to mount a rally but a late turnover stopped the momentum, dropping the Cards to 0-2.
- Anthony Pritzel will take over at quarterback this week after coming on last Saturday following an injury to Will Schneider. The redshirt senior has appeared in 23 career games with 1,468 passing yards and nine touchdowns. He owns a completion percentage of just over 45% for his career. He enters the week fourth in the GLVC with 124 yards per game while also rushing for 33.
- The running back core is young but has shown an ability to make things happen. In week one Tabren Yates posted a team-best 73 rushing yards while Livingston Benoit had 55 yards and a score in week two. Both players are true freshmen while classmate Jordan Clay and sophomore Josh Yancey have also posted carries for the Cardinals.
- Jalik Jaggwe and Jesse Thomas have been the top targets through the first two weeks of the season, accounting for 16 of Jewell's 34 receptions for 165 yards and two touchdowns. Jaggwe is up to sixth in the conference with 4.5 receptions per game for an average of 44 yards. Thomas, meanwhile, is ninth in the league with 45 yards per outing.
- Jewell enters the week atop the GLVC and 55th in Division II with an average time of possession per game over 31 minutes.
- After not committing a turnover in week one, the Cardinals had two last week, but are still tied for tops in the GLVC with McKendree and Southwest Baptist with just two giveaways, which is also 36th in the nation.
- Brady Monks punted 10 times last week, tied for second most in a single game in Jewell's NCAA era, one behind Rhett Purling's 11 in 2016. The redshirt junior enters the week ranked 40th nationally with a punt average of 38.1. His 724 yards on 19 punts through the first two weeks is already on pace to enter the top-25 in program history.
- The Cardinals have been disciplined through the first two weeks, ranking first in the GLVC and 17th nationally with just four penalties per game and eight total. Meanwhile, Jewell has forced opponents into 18 penalties for an average of 72 yards per game.
- Sophomore Cody McKimens enters week two with 1.5 tackles for loss, which ranks second in the GLVC, behind only UIndy's Kyle Borske. McKimens total is also 74th in Division II.
- Carson Anderson posted a career-high six tackles against Black Hills State to move into a tie with Kian Betancourt with a team-high 16 total tackles on the season. The duo is tied for fifth in the GLVC with 8.0 tackles per game.
- The Cardinal defense has held strong in third downs, holding opponents to a conversion rate of just 20%, second best in the GLVC. If opponents get to fourth down, however, they fair better, converting on average, 67% of the time.
