LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell football closes the 2022 season on Saturday on the road at Quincy University in the second annual Battle of the Birds.
THE SERIES
The Cardinals are 3-6 all-time against Quincy with the first meeting coming in 2012 with Jewell's entrance into the GLVC. The Hawks have won the last three meetings after the teams traded wins the first six seasons.
CARDINAL NOTES
- Jordan Clay has made a name for himself on the ground this season as the sophomore is up to 420 net rushing yards, eighth best in the GLVC on an average of 52.5 per game. In just his second season he is already up to eighth in the NCAA era (2011-present) with 682 career yards and 172 carries. Thomas Cook, Jr. (2012-15) holds both records with 2,078 yards on 465 attempts.
- As a team, the Cardinals have rushed for 1,303 yards, fourth most in the NCAA era, four shy of 1,307 in 2017. The 102.2 yards per game average is 10th best in the NCAA era as is the team's 342 carries.
- It will be a battle of the top two tacklers in the GLVC this week as the Cardinals Adam Callahan brings an average of 9.1 per game into the season finale against Quincy's Peyten Chappel (9.2). Callahan has put up double digits in each of the last three games, including 5.5 tackles for loss.
- After redshirting last year, Sean Mitchell has shined in his debut this fall, collecting 85 tackles, for an average of 8.4 per game, fourth most in the GLVC and the most total stops by a freshman in Jewell's NCAA era. The rookie from nearby Van Horn High School, also has six breakups, one interception, forced fumble and recovery.
- Jewell committed a season high nine penalties last week for 65 yards, but also forced #15 UIndy into seven of their own for 78 yards, gifting the Cardinals nine first downs. Entering the final week of the season, Jewell is still among the best in Division II in fewest penalties with an average of just five per game for 40.40 yards, both marks are top-12 nationally and second in the GLVC.
- The defense has put down 6.2 tackles for loss per game, third best in the league. The 62 takedowns behind the line of scrimmage this fall is sixth most in the NCAA era while the 208 yards are eighth. Callahan and Edd Becton lead the way with 11.5 and 10 tackles for loss, respectively, while Carson Anderson adds nine.
- Jewell has utilized 18 rookies this season, primarily on the defensive side. Justin Endicott, KC Ericksen, Terik Hickmon and Paul Geelen have all appeared in at least eight games in their debut seasons with multiple starts.
