Baseball Begins GLVC Series at Rockhurst

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team travels to crosstown rival Rockhurst University this week for a four-game series.

CARDINAL NOTES
  • Jewell enters the week at 20-11 on the season and coming off a series win over Southwest Baptist, including a 19-6 victory in game four, their highest total run output since 2019. 
  • Cole Conner leads the Cardinals with a .430 batting average, which is tops in the GLVC and 17th in Division II. Alex Epp (.400) and Cameron Fliege (.374) are also in the top-15 in the league in average. 
  • As a team, the Cardinals hit .326 which ranks third in the conference and 21st nationally with 31 home runs and 238 total runs. 
  • Jewell broke three different NCAA era records last weekend as Anthony Hansen hit career home run number 24, Jake Wilcox swiped his 20th base of the season and Drew Dant put up his seventh save of the year. 
  • Dant leads the pitching staff with 15 appearances, seven saves and a 1.63 ERA. 
  • Jake Sawyer and Jake MacDonald are both 5-1 with 2.83 and 3.32 ERAs, respectively while combining for more than 78 innings of work. 
  • Head coach Mike Stockton is in his 21st season at the helm of the Jewell program in 2022. The second longest tenured coach in program history and won his 600th career game earlier this season. 
     
ABOUT ROCKHURST
  • Rockhurst comes into the weekend sitting at 13-19 on the season, 3-9 in conference play after dropping three of four to Drury last week. 
  • The Hawks are led offensively by two players, Michael Laudando (.395) and Hoyt Bennett (.385) and have combined for 67 hits, including 13 doubles and seven home runs. Bennett adds 23 runs and 27 RBI, both team highs. 
  • Laundando also leads the pitching staff with eight starts, 52 innings of work and a 2.77 ERA with six complete games. 
  • Gary Burns has been at the helm of the Rockhurst program since 1994 and served as the Athletics Director from 2011-2021. Over his 28 seasons he owns 779 wins.
