Box Score LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell baseball team opened up their 2024 season at home with a 9-5 loss against the Northern State University Wolves, the first of a four game series at Fred Flook Field at Talley Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After allowing a run in the top of the first inning, junior Evan Jilbert blasted a two-run home run to right field in his first at-bat of the season to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.
- With a single-run deficit in the bottom of the third, a wild-pitch scored Jordan Phillips to knot the game up at three runs each.
- The Wolves plated six runs between the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to going into the final frame when freshman Charlie Rambo inherited, and pitched himself out of, a bases-loaded situation in the ninth to keep the score 9-3 headed to the bottom.
- After an Alex Epp double in the top of the ninth, Jilbert notched his second two-run homer of the day to bring Jewell within four, but the Cardinals were unable to finish the comeback.
KEY STATS
- In his first game in a Cardinal uniform, Jilbert collected two home runs and four RBI's, accounting for 80% of the Jewell runs.
- Epp went 3-5, including a double, and a run.
- Redshirt Junior Chandler Ashby who got the start received his first loss of the season after 5.2 IP, allowing four runs on five hits.
