Jewell Smashes 10 Homers In Split With Lewis

LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell baseball team split their Friday doubleheader against Lewis University, due to upcoming weather concerns the teams played a doubleheader in place of a normal Friday single game; a full nine inning first game, followed by a seven inning second game. Jewell held on in game one for a 11-10 win, while dropping the second game 12-6.

Game 1 (Jewell 11, Lewis 10)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell was quick to strike in the first, a double from Jake Wilcox scored leadoff man Alex Epp for the first run of the game. Four batters later with two men on, Dawson Tweet hit a no-doubter of a home run to make it 4-0 at the close of the inning.
  • After allowing one to score in the second, a home run to lead off the second inning increased the lead back to four runs. Epp would triple one batter later and would score off a sac fly from Wilcox to increase the lead to six runs.
  • In the third, Will Brant would lead things off with a homer to continue the Jewell run scoring. One inning later an RBI double from Evan Jilbert would score Epp giving Jewell the 8-2 lead.
  • Tweet would hit his second home run of the game come the fifth inning; a two-run shot to center field that bounced off the top of the fence.
  • The Flyers would get as close as a 10-9 deficit in the eighth, but a solo home run from Blasi would provide enough insurance as Jewell would hang on for the 11-10 win.

KEY STATS
  • Starting pitcher Charlie Rambo got his first win of the year after going five innings, allowing only three runs on eight hits while striking out three.
  • Jewell would hit five home runs, one from Brant, and a pair from each Tweet and Blasi. It ties the most home runs in a single game this season for Jewell.
  • Brogan McDougall would come in to close the game out with one out in the eighth. He would strike out four batters en route to his third save of the year.

Game 2 (Jewell 6, Lewis12)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lewis would get out to an early lead, plating seven runs between the two innings.
  • Jewell would begin a three-inning solo homer spree. In the bottom of the second and right on queue Will Brant smashed a solo home run into the Cardinal bullpen in left field. The next inning Cale Blasi would hit his third home run of the day over the center field wall.
  • The Flyers would score a pair in the top of the fourth. To lead off the bottom of the frame, Jordan Phillips would hit a fly ball that would carry over the fence to make it 10-3 Flyers.
  • Down nine Jewell was not out of it. Cameron Dayton would hit a lead-off solo home run in the fifth. Two batters later with a runner on, Alex Epp would hit a massive home run to right center to cut the Flyer lead to six.

KEY STATS
  • Jewell would again score five home runs, with Cameron Dayton hitting his first of the 2024 season. Epp's two-run bomb would be the only multi-run homer.
  • Coming in relief just 1.1 innings into the game, senior Ryan Foley would go the rest of the way striking out a career high seven, allowing 10 hits and five runs.
