LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell baseball team will take the field on Saturday for the first time in 360 days when they take on Bemidji State at 5 p.m. in Fort Scott, Kansas. The Cardinals will also meet St. Cloud State on Sunday at 12 p.m.

CARDINAL NOTES
- Jewell welcomes back four everyday starters who all hit better than .310 over 15 games last year. Anthony Hansen is the top returning player offensively, after posting a .368 average with a team-best 21 hits and 13 runs, while also driving in 11.
- The Cardinals were ranked first in the GLVC in 2020 and 13th nationally with 2.47 doubles per game, led by nine from Jade Smoot. The redshirt senior returns for his final season after hitting .347 with 12 RBI. Corner infielders Cameron Fliege and Nick Modrcin hit .327 and .313 respectively while combining for 10 doubles, 18 runs and 24 RBI.
- On the mound, Jewell will be the beneficiary of the NCAA's additional year of eligibility granted to 2020 spring sport seniors with the return of Shane Cavallo who was enjoying the best season of his career before it was cut short. Last year, Cavallo ended the year with a 0.87 ERA over 10.1 innings with 11 strikeouts. He allowed only a single earned run over three appearances. Mack Stephenson and Thomas Hennelly are also back for a fifth year. Stephenson has made 45 appearances with 35 starts and 164 strikeouts during his career while Hennelly had a superb 2019 season with three complete games.
- Nyk Yaquab was a solid reliever for the Cardinals as a sophomore, after starting the season off without allowing a run over his first four appearances.
- The Cardinals lost three regular starters to graduation last year, in center fielder Ben Pautler, first baseman/designated hitter Christian Chalabi and second baseman Mason Goade who hit .308 with 11 runs and two home runs.
- Jewell brought in a 14-member recruiting class, including seven transfers.
- Mike Stockton enters his 20th season at the helm of the Jewell program, amassing more than 500 career wins. The skipper was inducted into the William Jewell Hall of Fame in 2018 after being selected for the Ottawa Hall of Fame for his work as a player.
ABOUT BEMIDJI STATE
- Bemidji State is coming of a 2-10 mark in 2020, including a four-game sweep at the hands of Jewell in late February.
- Noah Boser leads the Beavers offensively, among returners, after hitting .409 with a team-high 18 hits, 11 runs and four triples.
- Also back is Isaiah Grancorvitz, who hit .298 while starting all 12 games. H finished the shortened season with a team-best eight RBI.
- Parker Borg is the top returning pitcher with a 1.80 ERA over two appearances.
- Tim Bellew is in his 16th season with the Beavers and owns more than 220 wins and is the second winningest coach in program history.
ABOUT ST. CLOUD STATE
- St. Cloud State is coming off a shortened 9-5 season in 2020, including winning three of their final five.
- Senior Lenny Walker is the only Huskie to hit over .300 a year ago, at .317 exact with a team high 13 hits, seven runs and four doubles.
- Jack Habeck made five appearances as a freshman in 2020 and was the Huskies top reliever, posting a 1.50 ERA. Two other returners, Shannon Ahren and Matt Osterberg also posted sub-3.00 ERA over 13.2 and a team-best 19 innings, respectively.
- Pat Dolan has nearly 500 wins over the 13 years with St. Cloud State and has led the Huskies to the nine NCAA-II tournaments.
