CARDINAL NOTES
  • Jewell opens the 125th season in program history this week with a trip to Colorado Mesa. Jewell held its first game in 1888, missed two seasons due to World War II, before returning in 1946. Over the last 124 seasons, the Cardinals are 582-482-50 with 27 conference championships and six national playoff appearances.
  • Head coach Mike McGlinchey returns to familiar territory this week with Mavericks playing in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. He spent four years as Defensive Coordinator at Colorado School of Mines from 2016-2019.
  • One highlight of the preseason was the quarterback battle with three arms vying for the role. Fifth year senior and two-time All-GLVC performer Will Schneider returns after missing two of three games in the spring with injury. Redshirt senior Anthony Pritzel, who took over Schneider in the spring, is coming off a strong performance that saw him set multiple single game records against Southwest Baptist. Meanwhile, Bart Harris, a transfer from Kansas State, added an interesting wild card. After three weeks of competition, Schneider was named QB1 with Harris as the backup.
  • The receiving core received a lift in the late spring as Jalik Jaggwe announced his intention to return for a fifth season. The two-time All-GLVC honoree enters the season as Jewell's NCAA era leader in yards per catch with 20.32, nearly five more than the next player.
  • The offense has seven newcomers appearing on the depth chart to start the year, including both running backs, Livingston Benoit and Jordan Clay, both true freshmen. The receiving core got a boost with Division I transfer Marquis Whitmire from Akron along with St. Louis standout Keavian Long. Along the line, Nathan Dostal and Sam Webert along with tight end Isaac Forbis, all listed at No. 2 on the depth chart, are expected to see significant time early in their careers.
  • In the spring, the key positions on special teams were made up primarily of true and redshirt freshmen. With an abbreviated season under their belt, the core is expected to level up this fall. Headlining the list is redshirt sophomore Grant Latina, who caught many off guard last spring. The shifty 180-pound receiver, doubles as the primary return man for the Cardinals and led the squad with 157 yards on 25 punt returns. Also returning on special teams is punter Brady Monks
  • Offensive Coordinator Neil Linhart leads the Cardinals into his second season after finishing second in the GLVC with 31 points per game and nearly 500 yards of total offense per outing. One newcomer to the offensive staff is former Minnesota standout Jimmy Henry. Henry played in two bowl games with the Golden Gophers and was a team captain as a senior in the fall of 2001. For the Cardinals, he will tutor the running backs and tight ends.
  • The defensive side of the ball is where the Cardinals can expect to see the most improvement in year two under head coach Mike McGlinchey, a who helped build Colorado School of Mines into one of the top defensive teams in Division II during his four years as Coordinator. Headlining the list of returners is All-GLVC First Team performer as a true freshman, Myles Nash who led the GLVC with three interceptions last spring. Against Southwest Baptist he posted two of those picks, along with nine solo tackles and one breakup. Also back is fifth year defensive back Gianni D'Arienzo who earned All-GLVC Honorable Mention honors, the first of his career, after posting 12 tackles with two breakups and a fumble recovery.
  • Tackles leader Mario Magana Jr. returns for his first full season since 2018. The redshirt junior missed the entire 2019 season due to injury before posting 22 tackles, including 15 solos, in three games last spring.
  • New to the staff but not to the program is inside linebackers coach Kevin Kim. Kim is a 2021 Jewell graduate and was a three-year letterwinner along the defensive line for the Cardinals. He suffered a career ending injury prior to the 2020-21 season and spent last spring as a student assistant before officially joining the staff this summer. He also oversees the management of football equipment.
  • On the defensive side of the ball, D'Arienzo has been named a captain for the second time, while Magana, Jr. earns his first team-voted recognition. Offensive captains for the second consecutive season are Schneider and 2021 spring All-GLVC First Team offensive lineman Danny Presler, a redshirt senior.

ABOUT COLORADO MESA
  • Colorado Mesa was one of the few programs that played fall football in 2020, as they scheduled five games, playing the first three, before the final two were canceled. The Mavericks, who were picked fourth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, enter the 2021 season after going 2-1 with wins over Chadron State and Black Hills State.
  • The Mavericks will look to a redshirt freshman under center, Karst Hunter. The transfer from South Dakota State who played in all 10 games, primarily on special teams, takes over a team that averaged 25 points per game in the abbreviated season.
  • Colorado Mesa will take the field with a large number of newcomers this year, including 42 transfers. The most experienced play maker on offense is Isaac Salazar who had four catches for 46 yards.
  • Defensively, Pierre Hayes posted 14 tackles and one blocked kick.
  • Tremaine Jackson enters his second season with the Mavericks and first full schedule after serving as the defensive line coach at Texas State and Abilene Christian. He was previously the assistant head coach at Division II Sioux Falls.
