Carlene Petersen is best known as the pioneer of women's sports at William Jewell having won four varsity letters as a member of the men's tennis team.
She caused the NAIA to re-write its rules and regulations regarding female participation in male sports. She played number one on the men’s team for three years, was named team captain as a senior, and competed in the Missouri Valley Collegiate Women’s Tournament each spring, which included players from all levels of colleges and universities in a six-state area. Peterson became a four-time champion of that event.
She went on to coach the women’s tennis team at the University of Denver for ten years.
