Carlene PetersenĀ is best known as the pioneer of women's sports at William Jewell having won four varsity lettersĀ as a member of the men's tennis team.
She caused the NAIA to re-write its rules and regulations regarding female participation in male sports. She played number one on the menās team for three years, was named team captain as a senior, and competed in the Missouri Valley Collegiate Womenās Tournament each spring, which included players from all levels of colleges and universities in a six-state area.Ā Peterson became a four-timeĀ champion of that event.
She went on to coach the womenās tennis team at the University of Denver for ten years.
