Roger Gench attended Jewell from 1970-1974. He was a four year letter winner in swimming. He also played football as a freshman. Gench was named NAIA-All American in swimming in 1971 in the 100-yard backstroke. He remains the school record holder for that race. He also swam in the 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 yard freestyle events as well as the 200 yard backstroke. He holds a record for the 200 yard backstroke as well. Gench was also on Jewell’s 400 yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays. He captured 19 first places wins as a freshman, 19 more wins as a sophomore, 20 wins as a junior and 21 wins as a senior.
