Tom Sponcil, a two-time All American, was offered a tryout on the U.S. men’s Olympic basketball team during the 1967-68 season. He was also the men’s Cardinal basketball team’s leading scorer and re-bounder during his athletic career.
After graduating from Warren Central High School in Indianapolis, Ind., Tom joined the William Jewell basketball team and began a legacy of athletic accomplishments.
The 1966 basketball team achieved a 12-2 conference record and 15-11 game record with Tom’s uncanny scoring and re-bounding. He made First Team All-Conference and All-District that season.
During Coach Jim Nelson’s last year at Jewell, Tom’s talent intensified the team as they accomplished a 16-10 record. The team also won second place in the MCAU with a conference record of 8-4. Again, Tom made All-District in the 1967-68 season.
The following year Tom guided the team through a rebuilding year under Coach John Hickman. Tom finished a season with a 16.8 scoring average and led the Cardinals to an 11-5 record. He made All-Conference and All-District first teams and won Honorable Mention on the NAIA All-American team.
Tom and his wife Beckie, live in Greenwood, Ind., with their two children, Brian and Allison. Tom has a successful career as a real estate broker.
