Hall of Fame
Groom attended Jewell from 1979-83 and was a four year letter winner in football. He played for two years under Coach Stan McGarvey and another two years for Coach Vic Wallace. Kelly Groom was named Team Captain his senior year. He was also an NAIA Academic All American and three year starter at quarterback with a 32-4-1 record. He made it to the NAIA Play-offs all 3 years. He was also part of the Cardinal team which played for the National Title (NAIA II) in 1982 and fell short just short of the championship after losing a game to Linfield, OR. Groom was the 1st Team All-Conference three times and 1st Team All District twice. He received an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American twice and was named the Team Offensive Player of the Year twice. Groom was the squad MVP in 1982. He also played one year of basketball at the JV level and was named WJC’s Athlete of the Year as a senior. Additionally, Kelly Groom was a member of Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He majored in Physical Education with a minor in History.
