Rich Stonum attended Jewell from 1966-70 and lettered in both soccer and baseball.
Stonum played on Jewell’s National Championship team in 1968, where he was named to the All Tournament team and Most Valuable Player of the tournament for three saves and the win in the championship game. In that championship game, Stonum pitched the final 11 innings in scoreless relief, also driving in the tying run which sent the game to extra innings.
It is Jewell's lone National Championship win.
?He played on three MCAU title teams in baseball, and was signed to a professional baseball contract after his junior year by the Seattle Pilots. He went on to play for the Milwaukee Brewers triple AAA team and the St. Louis Cardinals double AA team.
Stonum has also been a successful sports official, refereeing and umpiring in the Big 8 and Big 12 conferences in men's basketball and baseball, and also umpiring in the NAIA National Baseball Tournament from 2010 to 2013.
Stonum majored in Physical Education and English.
